The photo which impressed me the most.

With reference to our lesson from last week I would like to share one of picture which I like the most.

This is a photo taken by Kevin Cartner. He was born in Republic of South Africa – his family emigrated there from Great Britain. Carter opposed apartheid, that is a system of racial segregation which was very common in South Africa. His photos have been published in a local newspaper so thanks to photography he could expose brutality of apartheid. In 1993 Carter and his friend went to Sudan with the aim of taking photos of starvation’s victims. One day he noticed a poor little girl who was going to place where food was being given. When she stopped for a while to have a rest, a big vulture landed near by she and observed her. In that moment Kevin Cartner took this photo:

The picture was circulated in many countries. When it appeared  in New York Times, it caused a huge reaction of readers. They wanted to know what happened with the girl. A publisher of the newspaper  wrote in reply to these questions that the girl had run away from the vulture, but they didn’t know if she had reached her destination. Cartner said that after taking a photo he had sat down near a tree and he had been crying for a long time. But people started accuse him of passivity and they couldn’t believe that he hadn’t done anything to help her. This affair was one of the reason why on 27 July 1994 Kevin Cartner commited suicide.

I like this photo for two reasons. Firstly, it makes a really strong expression on me. When I saw it for a first time, I was so flabbergasted that I couldn’t say a word. It just made me think. Secondly, this is not only a picture but also a moving story which is connected with it. It show one of the biggest problems of our world - the problem which we are still wrestle with and which is, unfortunately, still not solved.

I don’t want to write down all the reflections which come to my mind when I look at this photo, because I think that everyone should draw a conclusion by himself.

a book

During my summer holiday I read Full Dark, No Stars. The book contains four novellas which were written by Stephen King:

•           1922
•          Big Driver
•           Fair Extension
•           A Good Marriage

All of them dealing with the subject of retribution, that is deserved punishment.

These stories terrified me, but on the other hand, the book was really absorbing. The descriptions were really realistic (sometime too much) and the actions were written in way which kept me in suspense almost all the time. It was the first time when I read a book of that author, but I hope I will have an occasion to read some other books written by him.

I recommend it to you, but only on condition that you have strong nervesJ       

Neighbourhood

Well… when it comes to my neighbours, the main problem is that there are a lot of gossips. I live in small housing estate where almost  everybody know each other (I always say that it’s “the village in the city”). It’s hard to be anonymous here. If you only want to get the latest news, just go to a grocery (it’s our “gossip centre”). People are really nosy… they spy on others, sound out, compare their “valuable” notes on almost every subject. Sometimes it’s even funny, but sometimes it can be also really annoying.

On the other hand some people here are very kind. It’s nice when I go to school at the early morning and somebody tells “good morning” smiling at me or when they propose to give me a lift.

What’s more I have great memories of my childhood because we had a small bunch (there was not too many children so we sticked together) and we’ve done a lot of crazy thingsJ (A drawback was that other neighbours have known our parents and they sometimes complained about us for no apparent reason). Now we rather aren’t in touch with each other but it is still fine to remember these days.

To sum up we have our ups and downs but it could be worse. I rather try to have good relations with my neighbours. Eventually we live here together and it’s always better when atmosphere is friendly;)

REVIEW: 'Big love'

Few times I was thinking about things that I could do for person with who I am in love (how much sacrifices I could make?). But I've never thought if I could kill somebody who I love because he asked me for this... as long as I watched 'Big love'.
This movie, directed by Barbara Białowąs, is about a relationship between teenage girl and a men who is 8 years older than she. Emilia (Aleksandra Hamkało) grew up without her father. In addition she doesn't get on with her mother who is an actress and hasn't enough time for her daughter. That is way the main character seems to be rebellious and a little bit lonely. So when in her life appears Maciek (Antoni Pawlicki) she quickly gets attached to him. Unfortunately their relationship becomes really toxic soon...
'Big love' in very courageous way shows how people's aspirations to reach an ideal love could destroy everything, in defiance of intended aim. What makes story more interesting is strongly developed psychological aspect of this situation.
In fact I really appreciate this movie because of two things - acting and soundtrack. In my opinion a cast is really professional. Although these are young actors, they managed playing so difficult roles. And soundtrack... for me it is sensational. Music creates here great background for the story. It makes integrity.
I recommend 'Big love' rather for older audience (I mean - not for children), because the plot is serious and could be difficult to understand. Anyway this film is moving and really worth to see. I encourage you to watch it:)

Few words for the beginning

I was thinking for a long time about subject of my blog. I finally decided that I would like to write about art because I'm interested in it a little. I want to share with you works of art (not only visual art, but also music, film etc) which I find interesting and which impressed me in some way. I hope you will enjoy it:)
